Adventures with Dad

Catching up, yet again, from sets a couple months back - In April my dad and I went out on a 90 mile weekend bike quest. Dad isn't much of a biker - he got his bike for Christmas and had put about 10 miles on it before we set out on the trip, despite my nagging for him to get at least 50 miles clocked on his bike computer. Amazingly, though, we got 45 miles in the first day, though we had to walk the last few due to very sore legs. On our trail, the C&O Canal, we had to get that far to get my weary father to the closest clean bed.

This was actually my first time shooting a wedding solo and I had a good time doing it and learned a lot. I'm looking forward to shooting more and thank S&J for giving me the chance!

Falling a little behind on the blog, here. These photos are from a couple days after Christmas. Christie and I went to Ocean City, MD for a couple days to enjoy the snowy beach and the cheap hotel room rates with in-door hot tubs. It snowed 15" the night before we got there (!) but it was so windy that you could hardly tell. It was a quite nice trip.

On another note, I will be getting studio space in downtown Bloomington on the corner of Kirkwood and Walnut later this month! In addition to portrait work, I'll be focusing on documenting artwork for students and artist with very competitive rates. Contact me to schedule a portrait session or any other studio work!

Richard and Allison's Wedding

I had the opportunity to photograph Richard and Allison's wedding with my good friend Bradley J. Cox this weekend. It was my first wedding, but it was a lot of fun. We got some great shots and I learned a lot about wedding photography - it's a lot of work, but worth it for the pictures we got. Richard and Allison were great to work with as well and I hope they're having a great honeymoon in Orlando right now.

Went to Maryland to see my parents for Thanksgiving and see some friends in Baltimore this past week. My friend Bretagne gave me a couple 11 hour rides on her way to and from western VA. I was lucky enough to see my friend and former housemate who I haven't seen in about 2 years and is living in a punk house in Baltimore now. I didn't bring my camera for it for obvious reasons, but I went kayaking on the Severn River with Adam and Ben. I haven't had much chance to do much kayaking, but it was awesome - there's a used equipment sale at the university this weekend and I'll be there looking for a good deal on one (or two).

The Hogwire String Band is a great old time band here in Bloomington, featuring renowned musicians Brand Leftwich and Linda Higginbotham. I had the privledge of getting to photograph them in Linda and Brad's backyard about a month ago and got some great photos for them to use in some promos coming up. Check them out if you can!

Defeating Indiana's Tallest

Last weekend Christie and I went camping up on the tallest point of Indiana - Browning Hill. Browning Hill is 928ft tall, making it just 72 feet short of being a mountain. A part of Hoosier National Forest in Brown County, it's a bit of a drive out in some pretty country roads and the only sign that there's a trail there is a tiny little post that is set out about 10 feet from the road. It's really beautiful up there and the leaves at this time of the year are awesome. Here's some pics.

I did my first time lapse in a while. I've been inspired by the amazing time lapses that have been coming out like this one. Of course, mine's no where near that caliber, but it was mostly an effort to get out there and do one. I'd like to build a dolly rig like Sean Stiegemeier uses in that video and have been checking out some plans on making them. For now, though, this is all I have to offer the world. I don't even have intense music on mine.... yet

I went to the Bishop last night to see one of my favorite musicians, David Dondero. I packed along my camera, which I haven't done much of for shows, but it was fun getting some sweet pics of some sweet artists. I hadn't heard Paleo before, but he was really good. His music is somewhere between Bob Dylan and Simon Joyner. Darren Hanlon was entertaining and seemed like a sweet guy. David Dondero is one of my favorite artists and I was psyched to see him. He performed awesomely, but his set seemed a little short. There was another band after him that I didn't get any photos of - Unwed Sailor. They were really good, but contrasted a little too much with the other dudes. I wish they had played before David so that he could have played a while longer.

Senior portrait shoot with Brandon

I have a senior portrait shoot with Brandon L. He was a little reluctant to smile for a lot of the pictures, but I managed to get a few good ones out of him. He's graduating this year and going to school to learn some hot auto-fixing skills, so we got a few shots of him with one of the cars he's fixed up already. Shoot went good and Brandon and Mrs. L are happy with the photos, so I think it was a success.

I'm taking booking for senior portraits right now, so if you know any seniors who need photos still, send them my way!

Went out with my housemates and friends yesterday to this very cool skate spot in Yellowwood State Forest. It's a drainage spot that has awesome banks for skating. We got kicked out by DNR about a half hour into it, so I wasn't able to get some awesome shots I would have otherwise there, but we went to a couple spots in town and got some sweet shots. Here's a few, and there's more (about 20) on my flickr page.

I'm pretty excited about my rate of photo taking this week. Got some great stuff almost every day of the week. I have a couple more shoots planned for the near future, as well. I'm also going to start promoting myself for Senior Portraits, so if anyone knows some good advertising avenues or knows of anyone who needs photos, let me know!

Tonight I took this photo. It is a self-portrait and a long exposure on the road. Luckily, nothing got smashed by a car, though I had to scramble a few times to get myself, my camera, my bicycle, and my flashes out of the road for passing cars just in the nick of time.

I think the photo's much better when viewed large.

Finishing up the trip pictures

Here's what I got left. Christie and I had a good time in the Umpqua National Forest. We backpacked about 15 miles over 4 days. We ended up hitching about 10 miles because Christie's back was having trouble with the pack. We landed at the Umpqua Hot Springs, which are pretty awesome. I didn't really get a photo to do it justice.

A fish passes our plane on our way west

I missed posting the beginning of our trip to Oregon, so forgive me, but I'll catch up real quick.

We landed in Portland and hung out for a couple days. We stayed in a "treehouse" and rode bikes and drank coffee and watched the sunset and other boring stuff like that.

My parents landed a couple days later and picked us up to take us down to the Southern Oregon countryside to stay with our family.

Of course, my cousin's daughters have been the center of attention.

Today, we went blueberry picking.

We're leaving tomorrow morning to get dropped off with our packs in Umpqua National Forest for 4 days. We're only hiking about 22 miles, but plan on meandering and lingering a lot. I'll have photos from that after the middle of next week, when we're back.

We went to the coast yesterday and had a great time. We hiked around for a few house down the beach and in the grass and dunes. It was Christie's first time seeing the Pacific Ocean, and that was pretty exciting for her. On our way back we found this seal beached and having trouble breathing on the beach. It seemed to be sick and we weren't sure what to do for it. We tried calling the ranger's office and animal control, but both were closed. It's the way it goes for a seal, I suppose, though. Maybe it's better for it if it's not surrounded by bunch of people in it's final hours, anyway.

I've been working on a project dubbed "Pedal Power Creations". I work for a business run by my friend Chad called Bloomington Pedal Power, which mostly consists of picking up recycling for local businesses on our bike trailers and schlepping said recyclables to our sorting headquarters. Pedal Power Creations is creating new things out of these disposed of items, in the spirit of reusing being better than recycling. I did some product shots of some things that I've made in the past month or so. These items are available at our etsy store

I'm settling into the bus now, so (once again), hopefully soon I'll be spending more time on my photography. I have a couple other projects going on, as well. More to follow on that soon, with any luck.

About a month ago I got back from a couple week trip down south. Christie and I went down hoping to catch some warmth, but unfortunately timed ourselves to catch the bitter bitter 2 weeks of winter that New Orleans got this year. It did get up to 65 one, day, though. We wore shorts!

On New Years Eve we found a spot on the levee wall with a ladder behind some abandoned junk yards and climbed it and watched the fireworks being shot near the French Quarter from just down the river while sitting atop some train cars.

We also went to a wedding of a couple crusty punks on top of the smoke stack building next to the river. A pretty awesome spot and ceremony. The vows were followed by an acoustic rendition of the hokey-pokey.

While in that region we went to hang out with my friends in Athens, Georgia for a few days. As far as weather, we might as well have stayed in Indiana there, too. But, it was good to see some friends and do some exciting things.

So, I've been obviously slacking on this blog, but it will be back soon. I've been distracted for the past month by a recent purchase of a school bus that I've been renovating and am soon moving in to. At the moment I'm visiting with family and friends in Maryland, so I have a bit of time.

Breaking the monotony of my parent's house, I went for a walk to main street in my hometown via the old, now abandoned, train tracks and train yard that I used to walk through to buy candy and go fishing as a kid.

I've been thinking about videos as an alternative art form. Specifically videos that are just a fraction or a single second or so long. Sometimes when I take a photos with my point and shoot I accidently slide the dial to video and get a couple seconds of video until I realize my mistake. Looking back on those, I've come to appreciate them a lot. With no illusion of superiority, the video clip at least offers a different way to communicate a moment than the still photograph. It seems like a medium definitely worth exploring.

It's been a gray week...

This past week has been nothing but gray, dreary weather and I've disappointed myself by not being terribly motivated to take many pictures. However, today and yesterday were magnificently wonderful weather-wise and I went for a little hike at the Cedar Bluffs Nature Preserve. Here's a few photos. I'm pretty happy with the first one, especially.

I thought it would be interesting to go through all the photos I've taken that I have on my computer and pick out all the hand held self portraits. So, I did that, and I made a short movie out of it. There's a bit over 200 photos included in it starting from 2003 until very recently.

In other news, I have just about finished with the equipment rebuild and should be getting the last and most important piece on monday; a Canon 50d with the 28-135mm lens. Looking very forward to it.

Maximum Summer '09!

I spent some time putting together a group of photos from this summer that I think represent my time and experiences pretty well. I took thousands of photos over the past handful of warm months, which were a bit longer for me than some of my friends in Indiana.

In late April I decided to get out of town and went for an 8 week motorcycle trip through the southeast into the deep south and to the southwest. I saw friends and made new friends in Athens, Georgia, through Alabama and western Florida, stayed with some buddies in New Orleans, went to Austin, Texas, on to Tucson and Flagstaff, Arizona, Santa Fe, and back to Bloomington. I got back to town and hung out for a few weeks before heading to Oregon for a family reunion and to hang out in Portland and see my friend Joe and see the city. After a couple weeks in Bloomington I headed out again to Chicago for a folk punk festival, afterwhich I rode my bike to Madison, Wisconsin to hang out with a friend and make some new ones and then rode my bicycle back to Bloomington with one of the new friends that I made.

That's the synopsis of my summer in just a few words. I'll let the photos fill in some details.

This old abandoned fire tower was in Talledega National Forest. It was fenced in with barbed wire and there were boards missing on the walk up. It was a good time.

There's a little gap here in my trip. I lost my digital camera to a freak tent flood incident while camping in Talledega National Forest in Alabama. Regrettably, I was without a camera for a good week and a half, until I had a loaner camera mailed to me in New Orleans, right before I left town, to use for the rest of the trip.

...and off I go. A series of difficulties in finding a proper camping spot in Big Thicket National Preserve in eastern Texas leads me to find a cozy spot to sleep in a field next to a Walmart near Beaumont, Texas.

The mosquitos were so bad I had to find a pile of dirt to set up my tent behind so I wouldn't be seen. Sleeping would have been an impossibility otherwise.

Austin, Texas was a great place to visit. I knew no one there when I arrived but within just a couple hours I had found some new friends who let me stay with them for a few days. Austin is a very cool town.

Western Texas is very beautiful. And very long and very straight. Plenty of opportunity for some quick self portraits while cruising 80mph on a 1982 Honda motorcycle with a leaky radiator.

The southwest is pretty awesome.

I arrived in Tucson and was set on leaving the city to see some of the beautiful country surrounding it. I've been to Tucson a handful of times but this was the first time I actually made it out. I went on an overnight hike on Mount Lemon, which is one of the most amazing pieces of nature I've ever seen. This is a grassy meadow about 7000 feet above the desert floor.

I was joined for the rest of the trip back to Bloomington by Carrie who came down to Tucson from Western Colorado.

The floods that we rode through in Oklahoma were not the best situations to take photos. Carrie recovers as we near Bloomington.

I got back to Bloomington and did a shoot for my friends Hugh and Tiga. They are facing felony charges as a form of political repression for activism against the I-69 extension, which will and has displaced hundreds of people while destroying thousands of acres of woods and farm land and increasing urban sprawl in areas where people are plenty happy not to have it. It is being proposed in the name of commerce; making it easier to truck things from exploited workers south of the USA. You can find out more about Hugh and Tiga's charges at their website.

Things were fun in Bloomington. Hanging out with friends, shows, fires, bike rides, the usual.

But I had plans to go to Oregon for a family reunion.

The extended family all gathered from Maryland, California, Washington, and Hawaii to be at my grandfather's property in Oregon before he sold it.

While in the region, I managed to escape from the family to go up about 4 hours to Portland to check out the city and see my friend Joe. Joe, Elly and I found a lot of dried fruit.

Emi, from Bloomington, happened to be hanging out in Southern Oregon, as well, and came up to Portland for a couple days to hang out and check out the city with me.

Joe and Elly's roommate Tobin hung out with Emi and I and showed us the northwest part of the city. Portland has lots of cool bridges.

I headed home again for a few weeks and did a headshot for an actor here in town named Jeremy. This is especially of note because this is one of the last photos I was able to take with my digital SLR before it was stolen off of my motorcycle just a few days later. I lost almost $2k worth of equipment. Lesson learned.

I headed off on my next trip - got a ride to Chicago with my friend Eric Ayotte, who was playing and screening his film festival at a festival called Southwest Folk Fest in a Chicago suburb. The fest was a good time, though I lamented no longer owning a camera. After the fest I rode my bicycle for 2 days through the rain to Madison, WI to visit a friend and see the city. Finally, I got fed up with not having a camera and went out and purchased a Canon G10.

I posted a couple photos from that trip in the last post, but here's a couple more.

I met Chancho in Madison and we got along really well. He decided to ride back with me, which was pretty awesome, since I left on the trip not really wanting to ride back by myself, and hoping that I would find someone to keep me company. It was a pretty good trip, despite the...

...grey, wet, rainy weather. It rained 4 out of the 6 days it took to ride back to Bloomington from Madison. Northern Indiana is nothing but soy and corn fields. Riding through monocrops for 2 1/2 days straight in the rain with a flat grey sky led me to believe that I now know what purgatory is like.

Relaxing on the side of the road is one of my favorite parts of bike touring.

We couldn't find a place to hide out for the night in Fowler, Indiana, as all the trees had been replaced by corn and soy. We took to knocking on doors to ask for a spot in a backyard, and quickly found a comfortable spot for the night.

Occasionally you can find the perfect spot to sleep, though. We hid out in this prefab shed in a prefab shed lot. It was especially welcome, as I was traveling with only a thin silk sack to sleep in and it was quite chilly that night.

Of course, the clouds began to part as we neared Bloomington.

Chancho and I had pushed ourselves to get back to Bloomington in time for my friend Crystal's pontoon boat party. I was very glad we did. The sunshine and friends were great to be around after all the greyness over the past week.

Hopefully I'll make a plan to leave town for a bit during the worst of it, but I have some plans here in town that I'm trying to work towards, many of them centering around this blog and photography. I finally ordered a new dSLR today and am excited about a bunch of photo ideas I have and putting my new equipment to use.

I'll be posting a lot of new photos on here soon, for sure.

Hoping to kick off this blog. I have a renewed energy for photography and am currently rebuilding my equipment list after having my camera bag with all of my best equipment stolen a few months ago.

I've been shooting with my new G10 for the past month and enjoying it a lot. It's a great little powerful camera that's great for the casual snapping and traveling. Here's some shots from a recent bike trip I took from Chicago to Madison, WI and back to Bloomington.
